Angela Evelyn Bassett (born August 16, 1958) is an Emmy- and Academy Award-nominated, and Golden Globe-winning American actress. She has become well-known for her biographical film roles portraying women in American culture, perhaps most prominently as singer Tina Turner in the motion picture What's Love Got to Do with It. Bassett was born in New York City and relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida as a child.Stage and screen star Angela Bassett will star alongside Paula Patton in Columbia's Jumping the Broom, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Salim Akil will direct the film, from a script by Arlene Gibbs and Elizabeth Hunter.

This wedding-themed ensemble comedy centers on two black families at opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum. The cast will also feature Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine, and Romeo Miller. Shooting is set to begin in early summer in Nova Scotia.

Bassett's stage credits include the original Broadway production of August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone, the Public Theater production of Macbeth opposite Alec Baldwin, and the Pasadena Playhouse production of Wilson's Fences.
